Fitschen, Jürgen: Gerhard Marcks, Das plastische Werk 1973-1981, mit einem Werkverzeichnis von Arie Hartog, Bielefeld 2004, cat.rais. 1141. "'Young man' is part of the artist's later oeuvre. "Towards the end of his life his subjects - as always - remained similar to those of the former decades. During these later years he continued to be a master of nudes, portraits, and animal sculpture. Whether lying, sitting, crouching, squatting, or standing the number of males and females, boys and girls either as single figures or in groups of two or three, has even increased. (...) Almost three quarters of Marcks' oeuvre are nudes to a moderate affect. Carefully chosen gestures emphasise the slender architecture of the figures' torso. (...) In most cases the nudes were based on real-life models, which he came across among his family or acquainances. True to old artistic belief, even his later works were not concerned with the detailed representation of appearences persued by statues that are in keeping with models. (...) Neither particular nor time-bound qualities were matters of interest, but that which is general and beyond time."
