Anon. sale, Bonhams & Butterfields, November 5, 2006, lot 29.~~Sylvie Buisson has confirmed the authenticity of this work.~~~~~As a significant figure in the glittery art scene of 1920s Paris, Foujita represented a new artist one who laced traditional Japanese painterly style with that of modernism, pushing to combine rather to compact his experience and travels in his art and vision. Known for his use of stark white and delicate lines, fleshy nudes and feline subjects, Foujita created a distinctive style of simplistic beauty and adoration for form itself. His expressive nature and colorful subjects represent the value placed on beauty and style during this age of dazzling wealth, artistic extravagance, and international socializing. ~~As a key member of the 'School of Paris' artists and consummate associate of the bateau lavoir circle, Foujita embraced the exotic, but more importantly, blended Japanese calligraphic techniques and elements of ukiyo-e woodblock prints with European Modernism, creating a delicate balance of line and color, application and orientation of design.
