Picasso (Pablo).- Programme for "Desire Caught by the Tail": A Play in Six Acts by Pablo Picasso, 6pp. duplicated typescript Foreword by Roland Penrose (the translator) stapled in printed wrappers with illustration by Picasso, vertical crease where previously folded, a little soiled and creased/frayed at edges, 4to, 1950.
⁂ Surreal play written by Picasso in Paris in January 1941, following the German occupation. It was first given a public reading at the house of Michel Leiris in March 1944, directed and produced by Albert Camus and including Simone de Beauvoir, Dora Maar and Jean-Paul Sartre in the cast. This first London theatrical performance was produced by William Jay and took place at the Watergate Theatre for two weeks in October 1950. It has rarely been performed since due to its incomprehensibility, although David Hockney appeared in a performance at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1984.
