Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Bäume am Hang (Sonniges Haus)
. 1934.
Black Chalk drawing over pencil.
Lower left signed and dated "34". Dated "35" and titled "Sonniges Haus" on the reverse. On firm creme wove paper. 36 x 50.5 cm (14.1 x 19.8 in), the full sheet. [CH].
• The following year, he created the closely related painting "Bündner Landschaft mit Sonnenstrahlen" (Gordon 1014).
• It was created in the solitude of Kirchner"s last retreat, the Wildbodenhaus, in the Sertig Valley near Davos.
• The artist depicts the Swiss mountains surrounding him in an abstract, reduced form, in bold, striking strokes.
• Kirchner depicts the landscape around Davos with the same intensity as his earlier depictions of city life in Berlin.
• Due to the almost ornamental hatching pattern, two-dimensional shading and parallel lines, research frequently refers to Kirchner"s style of the late Davos years as "carpet style"
.
The present work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.
