*This painting was acquired by Minnie Bryant and Britain Rice Webb of San Antonio in 1916. The Webbs were neighbors of Onderdonk in the Laurel Heights neighborhood and visited Onderdonk’s home and acquired this, and several other paintings by him. This painting has remained in the same family since that time; and is coming out of Mr. and Mrs. Britain Webb’s grandson’s collection, current. Britain Rice Webb was a lawyer and wrote for the Fort Worth Start Telegram in Fort Worth, TX before moving the family to San Antonio in 1916. The Webbs purchased this painting, along with the Paul Rodda Cook, Texas Landscape in this auction Lot 143 Britain was a banker, oil man and rancher before he retired to Arizona and passed away. Minnie Webb retained the remaining collection and passed away in San Antonio in 1970. In 1915, when this painting was executed, Onderdonk was responsible for assisting in acquisitions for the Dallas Museum of Arts’s American Holdings, art chosen from the State Fair. This role was necessary for Onderdonk to support his family, he longed to pain: “I wish that I could have time to devote one month to doing nothing [but] work out of doors with a free mind… “ This painting must represent a vital release for Onderdonk. Spending time in a different area, exercising himself to paint a refreshing landscape.
