JIM DINE
Double Apple Palette with Gingham .
Color lithograph and gingham fabric collage on grayish-white wove East Indian handmade paper, 1965. 592x710 mm; 23½x28 inches (sheet), full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 5/23 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by ULAE, West Islip, with the blind stamp lower right. A very good impression of this scarce, early lithograph.
According to Sparks, "Many of the objects depicted in Dine"s [born 1935] ULAE prints came from [master printer"s Tatyana] Grossmans" kitchen and workshops. After Flesh Palette in a Landscape , [color lithograph 1964-65] was printed, Dine added paint and collage to one of his own artist"s proofs and presented it to Grossmans as a token of affection. It was hung in a place of honor, over the table where guests were served an elaborate afternoon tea." Sparks 16.
