Françoise (full name Marie Françoise Gilot, born in 1921) is an art student and the long-time lover of Pablo Picasso, forty years her senior. During their relationship she bears him two children, Claude and Paloma. In honor of the dove designed by Picasso, which became a symbol of peace worldwide after his poster for the Paris Peace Congress in 1949, they named their daughter Paloma, born in the same year, the dove. According to tradition, Françoise, an artist herself, is the only person in the master"s life who is allowed to trim his hair. She is considered the most independent and intelligent of Picasso"s lovers. Françoise is, among other things, the first woman who was not abandoned by Picasso but ended the relationship on her own initiative. Many years after the separation, she published two books about Picasso: "My Life with Picasso" (1964) and "Matisse and Picasso. An Artist"s Friendship" (1990), the former of which would later be made into a film. The lithograph offered here comes from Picasso"s mature print work, in which he once again turns to lithography. In his characteristic formal language, Picasso has created a telling portrait of his muse at the time, who always raised her right eyebrow in his pictures. Françoise looks at the viewer confidently and demandingly - with this work, Picasso created an extraordinary portrait of a strong woman.
