Pettibone (born 1938) is a pioneer of Appropriation Art who recreated works by artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein (artists whose work notably already focused on the theme of replication and seriality) in miniature. Later in his career, he branched out beyond replicating works solely by Pop artists and found inspiration through a wide variety of printed photographs, from reproductions of paintings by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres to, as is the case with the present work, images of car and motocross racing. His work challenges the the traditional notion of the role of artist as the sole, original creator of a work of art and highlights questions of authorship, craftsmanship and the concept of originality as they relate to art.
