The current work is from the same year as Ram Kumar"s seminal work titled Homage to Wasteland. Inspired by T.S. Eliot"s famous poem Wasteland, this is Ram Kumar"s "holy hangover of the import and impetus" of the poem. The essence of the poem refers to the world being reduced to a wasteland post World War I. This is both a literal reference to the natural world that was being destroyed, and a commentary on the changing ethical and religious structures, as humanity faced a moral quagmire on larger issues.
Here, the artist has captured the same sense of desolation, using a similar palette with slight tonal variations. A similar method of paint application is employed for both canvases; highly textured with impasto and elements of cross-hatching, all of which present a highly satiated paint surface. Both works are broken into multiple picture planes, adding to the overall despondent mood.
