Souza had a relentless drive to innovate and reinvent his artistic production. In the 1960s, Souza invited Mohan Sharma, an artist born into a family of Nathdwara painters, to work in collaboration with him. The above artwork is drawn by Souza with skillful fine lines and the background is painted adeptly in opaque pigments by Sharma. The preparatory drawing for the current work was sold as part of lot 22, Christie"s, New York, 18 March 2014. The preparatory ink sketch in that lot is inscribed by Souza in the upper left corner with instructions to Sharma for the colour tones that needed to be added to the current work, which are listed as "blond hair, pink background, rosy nipples and lips." This lot is a result of a symbiotic partnership in which Souza provided the subject matter and delicate lines, and Mohan contemporised Indian miniature painting. Their relationship continued to extend beyond this set, and Sharma was eventually given the chance to showcase in the Arts 38 Gallery in London, run by Maria Figuerado, Souza"s first wife.
