PROVENANCE
Karin Norbäck (1882-1975), daughter of hunter Arvid Gustaf Norbäck (1837-1913), Arvika. Married in 1911 to physician Lars Erik Hallén (1888-1985), son of Lars Erik Valdemar Hallén (1843-1927) and Sofia, b. Trädgårdh, brother of Maja Fjaestad, b. Hallén, wife of Gustaf Fjaestad;
by inheritance to one of their grandchildren who sold the painting in 2020.
The motif is probably taken from Hundudden on Lake Racken in Värmland, where Fjaestad built a house in 1901-02. A watercolour of Fjaestad executed at this time shows that in front of the house next to the water there were trees similar to those depicted in the painting in question, probably alder or willow trees (A. Fjaestad, Gustaf and Maja Fjaestad - a pair of artists, 1995, illustrated p. 65). The absence of leaves on the tree indicates that the painting is carried out either in spring or autumn. The light reflections in the water are either solar or moonlight.
In the construction of the painting, Fjaestad has used a mosaic-like technique, which brings to mind Axel Törneman"s painting from around 1906. Törneman, like Fjaestad, was fertile from Värmland. Törneman"s first major monumental commission was four large paintings for Värmland"s individual bank in 1907.
