IVAN IVARSON 1900-1939 Summer morning Signed I Ivarson. Oil on canvas, 49 x 51 cm.
Ivan Ivarson is today known as one of our most prominent Gothenburg colourists. His artistry stands out with the amazing passion and feeling he has for color. "I would like to eat color" is one of his most famous quotes, and the auction"s painting makes it clear to us what he meant by this. He pushes the color to the top by juxtaposing the strong, unmixed complementary colors. The intense blue and rich red tones are so typical of Ivarson that they are almost perceived as his own signature.
Ivarson"s artistry has its roots in European expressionism and association with several well-known Swedish and foreign artists. At Valand"s art school, he studied with, among others, Tor Bjurström. Carl Kylberg was also a source of inspiration and an important artist for Ivarson. The blue parts that reappear in the upper, middle and lower parts of this painting and in combination with the architecture are reminiscent of Kylberg"s painting. However, Ivarson has developed this and in his own and completely unique way he depicts the reality that surrounds him. Ivarson primarily strives to reproduce and emphasize the landscape"s most beautiful colors in his fast and broad brushstrokes. It has been said that Ivarson did not find it so easy to express his perception of art in words, but he has in any case said: "To paint is to write poems in color - if the color does not play the first role, it can indeed become art - but not painting." And indeed, it is with color that he orchestrates his canvases.
