Ernst Billgren is one of today"s most versatile artists and designers. His work covers a wide range of disciplines such as glass and furniture design, scenography and literature and not least painting and sculpture. Billgren"s work is characterized by motifs that allude to mythology, nature and national romanticism. The auction"s painting is a beautiful example of Billgren"s artistic skill, challenging expression and fascinating versatility.
"Winter fishing" places the viewer in Billgren"s beautiful and mysterious animal world. In the foreground of the work we find the cunning fox who has just been on a successful fishing trip. The fox is perceived to be so close to the viewer of the painting, that one feels how it soon passes by us and disappears beyond the frame of the work. The fox"s squinting eyes and slight smile at the corners of its mouth are almost human-like. Portraying animals as if they were people is a chord of irony and comedy that characterizes Billgren"s artistry.
At the same time, one can constantly find traces of the classical art that Billgren so often uses as his source of inspiration. Fox in a winter landscape, a classic motif from nature painting. One finds in this work a link between today"s contemporary art and older painting, while at the same time it continues to challenge and surprise the audience.
In his book "What is art and 100 other extremely important questions", Billgren asked himself the question "Why are you so interested in foxes?". The answer read: “Short answer: Which foxes?. Long answer: If you walk into a chemist"s office, you will certainly find lots of test tubes and you can conclude that he is interested in test tubes. But I don"t think so. He is probably looking to discover a new enzyme or element, or find a cure for some disease. The test tubes are tools, and he probably doesn"t see them at all and has no interest in them or in foxes.".
