When Dr Bienvenido Gonzalez assumed the presidency of our state university in 1939, there were many firsts. The youngest head at 46 and the very 1st alumnus to do so, this was over the time of Pres Quezon. He made history again when he was reappointed for a 2nd term; earning the distinction of being elected twice, he was the 6th and the 8th University President. He had reassumed the 2nd term amidst the ruins and reconstruction following WWII but he forged ahead to move from Padre Faura to Diliman and became best known for being the architect of the expansion. He made this momentous decision to transfer amidst attacks from media and opposition figures, he persisted on this vision and succeeded on having the US war damage commission fund the project. He was also revered for his perseverance in maintaining the integrity / independence of the office in view of disagreements with Malacanang under then Pres Quirino. One of the big issues was when he lobbied against an honorary degree for then Indonesian Pres Sukarno. The controversies led him to leave the campus he had built in 1951.
Bienvenido"s father Joaquin was the forerunner to the UP, installed by then Pres Emilio Aguinaldo. His nephew Brother Andrew would follow a similar path and would be best known for the expansion of the De La Salle System.
Over his tenure as the head of UP, the likes of Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo Tolentino, Anita Magsaysay were also in his faculty or on campus. It was a unique opportunity that allowed him to appreciate art pieces which he could pass on to his family.
His portrait by Amorsolo as UP President was executed in 1954.
