Dieppe is a picturesque seaside resort in France that was extremely popular with Parisians before Deauville came became fashionable. The town centres around the sea and related activities including fishing, sailing and channel crossings. The Pollet Quarter, or the old town centre, is an artificial island bordered by canals and linked to the shores of the town by two old bridges, one of which is a Gustave Eiffel swing bridge.
Souza, having left India the previous year for London would have probably visited the seaside town, and painted Dieppe"s two best known features: the sea and the swing bridge, both of which are seen in the current work.
