Saint Francis of Paula. Canvas.
Murillo represented saint Francis of Paula multiple times. The Prado holds a painting with a similar composition (canvas, 106 x 101 cm, inv. nr. P000990), although here the saint is depicted half body and the position of the hands is different. Murillo also chose to depict the saint full body twice. In one of those versions a "CHA/RI/TAS" vision is painted in the upper left corner, similar to ours (canvas, 186 x 142 cm, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, inv. 2003.144). Finally, the British Museum keeps a 19th century lithograph with a very similar composition (buste of the saint praying) mentioning an original painting by Murillo in the Prado (Juan Bautista Ugalde, c.1825-1836, litho, inv. nr. 0410.1372). Without a doubt the artist of the present painting must have known these examples.
