As a representative of Chinese lyrical realism oil painting art, He Duoling caused a sensation in the tide of “Scar Art” with national characters and launched the modernist experiments with the integration of Eastern and Western female subject, leading a trend of individual independence in the contemporary China's art scene.
In 1948, He Duoling was born in Chengdu. He entered the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1977 to receive professional oil painting education. In the 1980s, he evoked a worldwide response from all walks of life with such works as “Spring Breeze is Awake”, “Youth”, and the comic strip “Snow Geese”. The artistic creation was also awarded the Bronze Award of the 6th and 7th National Art Exhibition. In the 1990s, He Duoling further explored the painterliness of oil painting, showing a free and poetic multi-dimensional space in the image. The artistic creations were exhibited in Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, the United States, etc., and the independent characteristics of Chinese modernist paintings were highlighted in a global perspective.
Influenced by the American realist painter Andrew Wise and others, He Duoling created a kind of art that “integrates baroque monumentality, transcendence of abstractionism, and the mystery and elegance of late 19th century art”, and “reconstructs the art of classical dignity, modern enchantment and romantic passion”. Together with Luo Zhongli and Cheng Conglin, who led the art trend in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, he was not afraid of the forms and emotions laid by traditional realist oil paintings. Instead, he calmly portrayed the feminine that he preferred with lyrical realist vocabulary and mysterious surreal atmosphere. He never presented the group-like social landscape, instead he depicted the complex, veiled and true emotional world of individuals in the image.
The “21-year-old Fang Lan”, an important masterpiece of the artist's creation in the post-2000s, was created in 2003 and published in the “Top 10 China Oil Painters: He Duoling”, “Oil Painter Studio Report: Interpretation of the Human Body” and other important paintings. With delicate and modern brushstrokes, He Duoling showed a standing female image in the painting. There was no eye-catching gesture, no sensational look, even no clothing adding beauty to her body, as if the only 21-year-old youth didn't need any embellishment. She looked at viewers with sharp eyes and responded without fear to the examinee from the authoritative subjects, showing the straightforward and rebellious intrinsic temperament of the female characters in Goya's paintings. He Duoling regarded the human body as a medium of light and color, “reflecting” the real world outside the image. While this painting, the soft background seemed to merge with the woman in front, reflecting the pure and straightforward inner world of the character with the pure atmosphere of the real world. The white underwear was quietly piled under the feet, bring people endless imagination of the scene. All these made this piece of “21-year-old Fang Lan” break the emotional limitations of Scar Art, showing the independent and fearless personality of modern women.
