Miss Paula Jacobsen (1923). Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914) brewer, art collector and patron of the arts. He was the son of brewer J. C. Jacobsen. Carl Jacobsen founded the Ny Carlsberg brewery around 1871. In 1879 he established the Albertina foundation for the purpose of decorating the squares and parks of Copenhagen with statues and sculptures. In 1882 he founded the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The collection soon expanded and achieved great international recognition. In 1897 he inaugurated the new building of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek at Dantes Plads in Copenhagen. Carl Jacobsen founded several trusts: For the Church, the Workers, the Arts and the Museums, and he was co-founder of Kunstindustrimuseet (Design Museum Denmark), which opened in 1894. He paid for the construction of the Jesus Church in Valby, the Huitfeldt Monument and the Little Mermaid statue at Langelinie in Copenhagen Harbor. He was the prime mover in establishing the French Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1888. Carl Jacobsen and his wife Otilia founded Ny Carlsbergfondet (The New Carlsberg Foundation) in 1902. Ny Carlsbergfondet is today one of the most significant foundations in terms of supporting the arts in Denmark.
