This work is known to have been part of the collection of Margarethe Mauthner, formerly of Berlin. In 1939, Frau Mauthner and her family fled Germany because of Nazi persecution, and Frau Mauthner was dispossessed including of portions of her art collection. A friendly agreement has been reached with the heirs of Margarethe Mauthner, and this work is thus free of restitution claims. This agreement with the heirs of Margarethe Mauthner includes a right of first refusal which may be exercised prior to the auction date, in which case this work will be withdrawn from the auction.
We are grateful to Drs. Margreet Nouwen, Berlin, for her kind expert advice.
