New York, Sidney Janis Gallery, New Paintings by Richard Anuszkiewicz, 10 February-6 March 1971.Richard Anuszkiewicz was born in Erie, Pennsylvania 1930 and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland, Ohio (1948- 1953), and then with Josef Albers at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture in New Haven, Connecticut (1953-1955) where he earned his MFA. He is considered to be one of the leading figures of the Op art movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s., ,Following his move to New York City he completed the first of his "optical" paintings in 1960exploring the interplay of color, geometry and form and their effects on visual perception. Anuszkiewicz soon received critical success in various one-man exhibitions as well as in the acquisition of his work by the Museum of Modern Art New York. In 1963, he was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Annual Exhibition. During this same time he was represented by legendary dealer Sidney Janis in New York (who also represented Josef Albers, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Mark Rothko). By 1965 Anuszkiewicz had firmly established himself as a leading figure in the Op art movement and was featured prominently in The Responsive Eye, a landmark exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art New York examining optically driven artworks and kinetic art., ,His work has been the subject of more than 100 solo exhibitions and has been added to the collections of nearly 100 public institutions throughout the world. His paintings and sculptures have been at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington D.C.; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the National Academy of Design, New York; and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York amongst others. Anuszkiewicz has at documenta IV (1968) in Kassel, Germany and the Venice Biennale (1986). He has won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship, the Cleveland Arts Prize, and the Hassam Fund Purchase Award
