Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner in January 2012 Lots 177 and 178 relate to the Over the River project, an example of the kind of large scale, environmental installation synonymous with Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The project was to be constructed along a 42 mile stretch of the Arkansas River between Salida and Canon City to the east of the Rocky Mountains in south-central Colorado. The concept was to suspend multiple fabric panels high above the river creating a continuous impression of silvery, translucent material billowing over the water. The original inspiration for the design came in 1985 when Christo and Jeanne-Claude were working on one of their most iconic projects, the wrapping of the Pont Neuf in Paris. One of the fabric panels was suspended above the Seine as it was moved into place, planting the seed of inspiration in the artists" minds for Over the River. The search for an appropriate site began in 1992, with the artists prospecting eighty-nine rivers across seven states before narrowing the search down to six possible locations. In 1996, Arkansas River was chosen as the best site, its high banks allowing for the greatest elevation. By 2011, Christo had received all the necessary federal and local government permits, however, public reaction to the project was divided and a local campaign group launched lawsuit opposing the work on environmental grounds. The ensuing legal battle waged for five years without resolution. Tiring of the battle, Christo decided to devote his energies to other projects and this truly monumental feat of artistic and logistical endeavour was never realised.
