acquired directly from the artist in Paris by a European private collector in 1965 Sanyu (or Chang Yu) was born in Nanchong, Sichuan Province on October 14th, 1901 into a successful business family. He was educated at home and received painting lessons from his artistic father. Sanyu, with the financial support of his wealthy family, decided to travel to France in 1921 and after spending a period of time in Berlin, he returned to live in Paris where he enrolled at the Acamémie de la Grande Chaumier. Here he developed his love for life drawing and in particular, for the nude. The present drawings are dated to this period of early 1930s. Sanyu's life was thrown into turmoil at that time by the death of his brother, Junmin, and the failure of the family's silk milling business. The financial support the young artist enjoyed was now at an end. With the added pressure of his divorce to Marcelle and problems with his dealer, Henri-Pierre Roché , this was the most disheartening period of Sanyu's life. Nonetheless he maintained many friendships and developed many new ones including befriending the artist Alberto Giacometti. The owner of these drawings, who now still lives in the Montparnasse area of Paris, was a close friend of Sanyu, who also lived in the 14th Arrondissement. In the early 1960s he offered financial assistance to Sanyu and was rewarded with numerous drawings of charcoal, pencil and ink by the artist. At this period, both men collaborated in the writing of a cook book which, sadly, was never published. Sanyu died on August 12th 1966 in his studio at 28 Rue de la Sablière, having succumbed to accidental gas intoxication.
