:~London, The Lefevre Gallery, Recent Paintings by Winifred Nicholson and John Wells, April 1946, no.1~~Winifred Nicholson tended only to paint specific pots or jugs for a short period of time. Cardigan Bay (see Fig 1 and also Winifred Nicholson, Christopher Andreae, Lund Humphries, Farnham, 2009, p.76) depicts the same jug and flower as Yellow Jasmine & Ash Tree, and was also exhibited in her Lefevre Gallery show in 1946 (no.12). Very probably Yellow Jasmine & Ash Tree and Cardigan Bay were painted while Winifred Nicholson was visiting Wales towards the end of the War, or shortly after.~~She wrote about her use of colour, "I paint flowers, but they are not botanical or photographic flowers. My paintings talk in colour and any of the shapes are there to express colour but not outline. The flowers are sparks of light, built of and thrown out into the air as rainbows are thrown, in an arc" (Three Kinds of Artists, quoted in Unknown Colour, Paintings, Letters, Writings by Winifred Nicholson, Andrew Nicholson (Ed.), Faber and Faber, London, 1987, p.239).~~We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his assistance in cataloguing this work.
