Rebozo is a very good example of Elizabeth Catlett's mid-career work - incorporating Mexican and modernist forms in this seated figure. Catlett made two different versions in bronze - one in 1952, with a brown patina, and this version in 1965, plus a large limestone sculpture in 1957. Casts of Rebozo IV were included in the 1972 solo exhibition Elizabeth Catlett: Prints and Sculpture , Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, and in the 1998 Elizabeth Catlett Sculpture: A Fifty-Year Retrospective , Nueberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York.
