Born in Dresden, Germany in 1932. Received classical education of paintings at the Dresden Art Academy in East Germany from 1951 to 1956. Moved to Dusseldorf in West Germany due to the higher restrictions under the communist system of East Germany in 1961 - right before the separation of East and West Germany by the Berlin Wall. Entered the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts and developed his own style. Freely jumping over the lines of representation and abstraction and consistently pursuing the possibilities of painting, that makes Gerhard Richter as one of the most influential living artists in the World today. Exploring the meaning and boundaries of photography and painting are the significant feature of Richter's work. For instance, "Photo paintings" that subtly blurs the image which precisely reproduced from photographs, and "Overpainted Photographs" that draws with oil or enamel on snapshots. This work is from the series of “Overpainted Photographs”, which is based on a photograph taken by Richter in 1992 in Kassel. The print is the artist's contribution to the collector's portfolio B of the Documenta IX Edition, which also contains prints by Jimmie Durham, Royden Rabinowitch, Ettore Spalletti, Pat Steir and Christopher Wool.
