Sam Francis was born in San Mateo, California in June 1923. He began to paint during World War II when he was hospitalized due to an accident in flight training. He is also known as a color painter who follows the tradition of Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism. In 1957, he visited Japan for the first time while traveling the world. The influence of Japanese art can be seen in his works after this visit, such as the composition that makes the most of white margins and the expression of the "bleeding" effect. Since then, he had his studios in Tokyo, New York and Paris. He often visited Japan and interacted with Japanese cultural figures and artists such as Sofu Teshigahara, Kenzaburo Oe, Makoto Ooka, and Fujio Koyama. Sazo Idemitsu, the founder of Idemitsu Kosan and known as the collector of oriental antiquities, who is also a collector of Sam Francis' works. Many works of Sam Francis are still collected in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts.
