Portrait of Nusch Eluard.
Ink wash signed, dated and dedicated lower left: Pour Nusch pour Nusch, 3 août 37 Picasso.
44.5 x 28.7 cm, framed
Nusch Eluard, born Maria Benz in 1906 in Mulhouse, became in August 1934 the second wife of Paul Eluard. Picasso and Eluard had known each other since the 1920s, but from 1935 onwards, they developed a very strong friendship that would also result in an intense and regular artistic collaboration.
From 1936 until the war, they spent their summer vacations together in the south of France, staying at the Hotel Vaste Horizon, accompanied by Dora Maar, Man Ray and Ady, Lee Miller and Roland Penrose. Numerous photographs of Man Ray, Dora Maar and Lee Miller recall these moments.
Picasso was very fond of Nusch, of whom he made several portraits, varying in style and technique. This one was done just two months after Guernica.
Sublime and mythical portrait of Nusch by Picasso.
