In 1921, at the invitation of André Breton and René Hilsum, Max Ernst exhibited his collages, watercolors and drawings in Paris, at the Galerie Au Sans Pareil. He cannot attend, prevented from leaving Germany. Fascinated by his works, Paul Eluard decided to visit him in Cologne, accompanied by Gala, in the fall of 1921. It was the beginning of a great friendship, but also of an intense artistic collaboration. During this visit, the poet chose among the works shown to him by Max Ernst, those which would illustrate his collection Répétitions, including this collage.
This collage is similar to the painting by Max Ernst, Oedipus Rex, 1922.
