Alexandra Exter (Russia 1882‑1949). Costume design for Aelita
Signed and dated in Cyrillic A. Exter 24. Watercolour, pencil and ink on paper, 33 x 22 cm.5 cm (sheet).
In 1923, Alexandra Exter worked on sketches of costumes and headdresses for the first Soviet science fiction film directed by Y. Protazanov ”Aelita”, based on the novel by A.N. Tolstoy. “Mezhrabpom Rus” provided Protazanov with huge funds for the production of the film “Aelita”. In the pavilions of the film studio, huge decorations were built based on the layouts of the constructivist artists Rabinovich and Simov, the decorator Kozlinsky and the costume designer Alexandra Exter. The advertising campaign that preceded the release of the Soviet film Aelita was unprecedented. In the silent film era, it was the first feature-length film about space travel.
Alexandra Exter presented at the 1924 Venice Biennale costume sketches for the film, and they were a resounding success.
