Antonio Zanchi Italien 1631-1722. Simson och Delila. Olja på uppfodrad duk, 102 x 142.Oil on relined canvas, 102 x 142 cm.
The authorship of the present lot has been kindly reckognised by Professor Riccardo Lattuada on the basis of a photograph. He correctly observed that the figure of Delilah shows Zanchi"s characteristic female type, such as also occurs in his picture of the Death of Cleopatra, oil on canvas, 173 x 230 cm, formerly in the art trade, Milano (P. Zampetti, Antonio Zanchi, in : I Pittori Bergamaschi dal XIII al XIX Secolo, Il Seicento, 1987, IV, no. 540/66); in the picture of an unidentified Roman History, oil on canvas, 132 x 156 cm, of which the whereabouts are unknown (see Zampetti, op.cit., no. 590/ 182) and in that of Susanna and the Elders, oil on canvas, 144 x 137 cm, in a private collection, Venice (Zampetti, op.cit., no.582/ 154). Zanchi"s other interpretation of the subject of Samson and Delilah, oil on canvas, 215 x 285 cm, is in Palazzo Albrizzi, Venice (see Zampetti, op.cit.,no. 145). A drawing of the subject is in the Uffizi (Zampetti, op.cit., no. 190).
