Surprised Bather, white marble, signed, by J. Dalou
The theme of the Bather appears throughout Dalou's career, starting with reminiscences of Falconet characterized by their purity and more realist figures, busy with their daily toilet, some of which are cold, but not without sensuality. The surprised bather in marble from the Lafarge collection was commissioned from Dalou by the Countess de Rouvres in 1901. A terracotta and model in plaster are in the collections of the Petit Palais (inv. PPS00256 and PPS00266).
Sitting on a rock, her hair is up to the toilet, the bather covers her nudity with her hands in a gesture that we can imagine as being sudden, provoked by the arrival of an undesirable spectator. The artist no longer needs the pretext of Diana, Suzanna or Bathsheba to illustrate the sensuality of a female body, the marble stresses the sensuality and softness of its curves.
