Orpheus playing to the animals, oil on canvas, signed and dated, by D. Teniers
h: 157w: 133.50 cm
Our ambitious composition is far removed from small formats painted on copper or oak panel and depicting scenes of taverns, village festivities or antics. David Teniers is here a painter of history. The format and subject as well as the imposing signature bear witness to the artist's ambition in his company. The painting seems to have been appreciated enough to have been partially taken up by the artist's studio as evidenced by a painting presented in public auction in 1989 (Anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Ader Picard Tajan, December 15-16, 1989, No. 53).
The theme of Orpheus is quite common in painting of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and is the ideal pretext - like the ark of Noah and Adam and Eve in earthly paradise - to represent the richness of the known animal world. On the other hand, it is more original to see his wife Eurydice appear alongside him in this episode of the ancient story.
