Email from Nicola Spinosa regarding this painting, dated June 15, 2017. Spinosa was the leading expert on Jusepe de Ribera and he examined high resolution images and UV images of this painting in 2017. The email translates as follows
Dear Dr. Gray
the painting, based on an examination of the photos sent, is neither by Ribera, nor by Francesco Fracanzano, but by the Flemish Hendrick van Somer, who was active in Naples, where from ancient sources he is named Errico Somer or Semer and Errico Fiammingo, from the mid-1620s, first in Ribera"s atelier, then independently, imitating the latter"s models until after 1650, but using a denser and brightened pictorial material. Tova examples and bibliography on Somer in the catalog of the exhibition Return to the Baroque. From Caravaggio to Vanvitelli, presented in Naples from 2009 to 2010 by me.
Let me know how I can still be useful. Best regards.
Nicola Spinosa
