The present work is informed by the architecture of the then recently constructed East Stand of Stamford Bridge football ground, located close to Clough's Chelsea studio. The stand was built in 1972 by architects John Darbourne and Geoffrey Darke, the work's first owner. The painting was selected by William Packer for inclusion in the Arts Council's inaugural British Art Show.
