It was during the scorching summer of 1905, in Collioure, that Matisse and Derain laid the first foundations of Fauvism together.
The small Catalan port is dazzling with light and colors, between sea and mountains. Matisse left him in September, returning to Paris with 15 paintings, 40 watercolors and 100 drawings in his luggage. A few weeks later, the Fauve movement would be baptized by Vauxcelles at the opening of the Salon d"Automne of that same year, 1905. Our two drawings still reflect the Neo-Impressionism of Signac through the vibrations of the pen but already present a synthetism. characteristic of the tawny design (hull of the Catalan boats, arabesque sails, diagonals on the back supported by the masts).
