A.R. Penck (born in 1939)
Front, 2007 Acrylic on canvas. Signed lower right. Signed and titled on the back. H: 70 cm W: 90 cm A. R. Penck "He takes the name of Albrecht Penck (1858-1945), geologist specializing in the ice age. The choice seems telling and relevant: the work of the artist, while presenting a primitive aspect , seems to be the result of the agglomeration of different "strata" of the history of the art of humanity. Furthermore, like the geologist, A.R. Penck often restores a global vision of the world: he mixes references to different civilizations (Aztec, Egyptian, African, etc...) and does not hesitate to title a series of works Tableau-monde. His work presents itself as a profusion of eclectic signs forming a universal language: stick-man, arrows, crosses, ideograms, words, mathematical signs, geometric shapes, political or religious symbols, etc... With these signs, he does not hesitate to mix a figurative or abstract plastic expression to finally create his own mode of communication, his own writing , understandable by everyone."
