This double-page watercolour painting is part of a series of eight double-page scenes which Pechstein created in 1925, commissioned by Max Reinhardt, as stage designs for the production of the play "Das Käthchen von Heilbronn oder Die Feuerprobe" by Heinrich von Kleist. The premiere took place in the presence of Pechstein on 29 December 1925 at Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In two letters to his friend doctor Dr Walter Minnich from Montreux, Pechstein comments on his exertions during the project: '...working like an animal into the night to finish the designs for the stage designs for Kleist's 'Käthchen von Heilbronn' to the extent that I can make a provisional scenery rehearsal tomorrow morning..." (letter dated 13 Dec. 1925). "...on Dec. 29th, I have now also been liberated from the theatre, which gave me much pleasure but wasn't very profitable. I enclose a review, it was a huge success, even I had to take a bow, which was not so much to my liking..." (letter dated 2 Jan. 1926) (Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg, Altonaer Museum, Inv.no.1987-49,33,1 and 1987-49,34).
