Stanley Kennedy North, William Nicholson, Drawing and Design, July 1923, (ill.p.522) Lillian Browse, William Nicholson, London, 1956, no.206 Patricia Reed, William Nicholson: catalogue raisonné of the oil paintings, London and New Haven, 2011, cat.469 This view of the Tuileries Gardens was painted during one of several visits that William Nicholson made to Paris during 1922 while engaged on the portrait of Diane de Rothchild, the teenage daughter of Baron Robert de Rothchild (Private Collection, Paris). A larger work entitled The Drummer of Tuileries was exhibited at the Goupil Gallery, London, in the summer of 1922 (Summer Exhibition, no.16) and the present work is believed to be a related composition, executed on the spot, probably in the late winter or early spring as the weak, lemony sunlight behind the trees, and the two figures in winter coats walking just outside their shadow, seems to indicate. Nicholson's brushwork is of interest. He has left the dark underpainting exposed to form the silhouette of the trees against the setting sun, and gives them form by swift, diagonal strokes carrying varying shades of green. When The Tuileries was illustrated the following year (1923) in an article on Nicholson published in Drawing and Design, the inscription and signature 'Paris/Nicholson' were clearly visible, but the information is now indistinct. We are grateful to Patricia Reed for her assistance in cataloguing this work and compiling the catalogue entry.
