The 'Vue de Saintes, taken from Lormont', testifies to this complicity, indeed Courbet and Corot painted this same point of view. Jean-Baptiste Corot's painting is in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Liège (Figure 1). It bears the precise date of August 14 (1862). The topographic elements are similar; Lormont is a hamlet between Port-Berteau and Saintes. The view of the city of Saintes is more precise, the silhouette of Courbet painting under his umbrella more assertive, we feel that the two artists have influenced each other.
Far from the frank Franche-Comté landscapes, Courbet during his stay in Saintonge indulges in outdoor painting. A unique example in the painter's work, this painting prefigures the practice that will constitute the basis of Impressionism.
The two paintings were collected in two exhibitions at the Ornans Museum in 1962 and at the Saintes Museum in 2007 in the retrospective 'Around Courbet en Saintonge' organized on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of his death.
