This work is based on an oil painting dated 1936 on the back by Dalí, currently kept in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
This painting probably originates from a fantasy by Dalí, about a hidden voyeur who observes his object of desire through the window of a ruined building. The branch may refer to the myth of Daphne, who was transformed into a bush. This would also explain the green tint of her breasts.
