Throughout the 1920s, the evaluation of the results of the Open-Air Painting Schools emphasized the change that was taking place in the art of Mexico, and at the same time it was a sign that this was not only due to the work of renowned artists, but that the important role of the creations of the children who attended the schools had to be considered. That is to say, at that time, there was a change in the definition of what should constitute the artistic and the national. Over the years, other models with a similar profile to the Open Air Schools emerged; for example, the School of Sculpture and Direct Carving directed by Guillermo Ruiz, and also two Popular Centers for Urban Artistic Education: Santiago Rebull, under the direction of Gabriel Fernández at the Popular Center for Painting in San Antonio Abad and Saturnino Herrán with Fernando Leal in charge in Nonoalco.
