This lithograph belongs to the folder "Portraits Imaginaires" which originally contained 29 lithographs.
In 1969, at the age of 88, Picasso painted 29 works that he called Imaginary Portraits, since they are portraits (with details as if alluding to historical figures) but which do not actually portray anyone in particular. Most of them are painted simply on corrugated cardboard, with few features and pure colours. They are an example of the maturity of an artist: a lifetime has led him to synthesis, he no longer needs great display or too much sophistication to generate an enormous amount of energy.
