Christo and Jeanne-Claude were a married couple of artists who made environmental art installations, which are mainly characterized by using fabric to wrap gigantic buildings, monuments or cover large public areas. The duo"s temporary projects, such as The Gates in Central Park and Wrapped Reichstag, they intervened in public spaces as a way of appropriating them and redefining them.
For each of the projects, Christo made preparatory drawings and collages that show the artist"s technical mastery and, at the same time, functioned as economic support for their realization. The artists never accepted sponsorship or subsidies and paid for their projects in full through the sale of Christo"s original collages and drawings, as well as his early works.
Morton Auctions is pleased to present to you one of these pieces, lot 160: the project for the Jujol fountain, entitled "Wrapped Fountain (Project for "La Fontana de Jujol, Plaza de España, Barcelona") which began in 1975, where the intention was to wrap Jujol"s work, as they did in other monuments in other cities.
This piece is constituted as a 2D model, where materials such as fabric and thread build an atmosphere that provokes the sensation of being wrapped together with the impression of the monument; ink, crayon, marker and the architectural elevations of the fountain, provide the spectator with the sensation of working with the artist. The blue threads wrap the colored fabric that covers the scale relief of the monument; in contrast with the lights in the background, the immensity of the Catalan capital is felt; and with it, a poetic allegory to Spain, with three niches with sculptural groups that symbolize the rivers that flow into the fountain. in the three seas surrounding the Iberian Peninsula.
Although this project began in 1975, it was not carried out due to a ban by the mayor of Barcelona and was resumed in 2009, but it was also unsuccessful. They edited a series of lithographs with the image of the fountain wrapped in a huge sheet, held together with a series of ropes together with small images of the elevation of the fountain, the floor plan and the site plan.
Among their projects, they wrapped the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Christo rented a small room near the monument and from then on he felt drawn to it. In 1962 he made a photomontage of the wrapped Arc de Triomphe, seen from the Avenue Foch and in 1988, a collage. It took 60 years for him to finally produce the Arc de Triomphe.
