Private collection, Denmark. Acquired directly from the artist. The painting was probably painted at the artist's summer residence, "Kylbergshus" in Aalsgaarde, Denmark, which he acquired around 1936. The seller's family borrowed the house in North Zealand during the summers of World War II, when the artist was unable to travel to Denmark. "Should color not be the most important thing for a painter? (.) In my opinion, at least, a painter should above all use color and squeeze out all the possibilities from the paint tubes. Of all the different types of art, painting is surely the one demanding the use of color. Other artistic disciplines may be referred to other main materials. But if a painter burdens his work with a lot of unnecessary shapes, they become so personal, so limited. Until now, the shape or rather the shapes have been allowed to dominate far too much. If, in a painting, you wish to try to express a deeper reality, and that is what I above all strive to do, you have to be wary of using too many intrusive shapes. I try to penetrate the shapes in order to bring out other values (.)".
