This work is an original preparatory drawing for one of the plates of the project "Estampas del Popol Vuh", one of the most recognized portfolios of graphic work by Carlos Mérida, published in Mexico by Graphic Arts Publications Editores.
"Estampas del Popol Vuh" consisted of 10 lithographs and texts with fragments of the Popol Vuh, it was printed in 1943 in the Lithography Department of the Talleres Gráficos de la Nación. Carlos Mérida was restless by nature, a traveling artist who liked to change his environment. He loved to wander around and learn about other cultures, as well as experiment and seek inspiration in nature, a concern that was reflected in each of his works. He tried various genres and techniques including easel and mural painting, graphic work and designs for theatre and ballet sets. He produced documentary work scattered in a large number of works on dance motifs and regional Mexican instrumentation, especially venturing to deal with themes of pre-Hispanic culture.
"I have the ambition to make poetic painting, because I believe that there is no art without poetry." Carlos Mérida.
