It was designed for the poster for the Lichtenstein exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1967. The exhibition was on view from April 18 to May 28 at the Museum and at the Walker Art Center from June 23 to July 30 of the same year. This work is based on the "Brushstrokes series", a series of paintings made by Roy Lichtenstein between 1965 and 1966. The theme is that of the work of art in its production. Lichtenstein sought to represent the gestural expressions carried out in brushstrokes of a painting and was based on the expressionism of Jackson Pollock. The series has been considered a satire of this artistic movement.
