She arrived from Costa Rica to Mexico at only 23 years of age and hungry to grow despite having received various displays of support in her native country where her training began at the School of Fine Arts along with lessons in carving religious images. Upon her arrival in Mexico she helped in the workshop of Manuel Rodríguez Lozano as well as in that of Oliverio Martínez. Years later it was Francisco Zúñiga who trained students such as Pedro Coronel and Manuel Felguérez.
