Alexandre CALDER (1898-1976)
Five wings, circa 1967 Stabile for the Faculty of Sciences of Jussieu. Painted metal model. Height: 70 cm Listed in the archives of the Calder Foundation under number A 24780. As a member of the "Painting, State Purchasing and Decoration of Public Buildings commissions" Jean Lescure participates in the choice of decorations for the Faculty of Sciences of Jussieu. For the creation of the new campus of the Faculty of Sciences of Paris, André Malraux"s choice fell on the architect Edouard Albert because he was one of the few in his profession to integrate works into his projects of contemporary artists. Many artists were therefore approached to create works on campus in compliance with the law on the artistic 1%: Henri-Georges Adam, André Beaudin, Jean-claude Bédard, Jean Dubuffet, Léon GISCHIA, Jacques Lagrange, Henri Matisse , Pierre Manoli, Alexandre Calder, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Raoul Ubac, François Stahly, Victor Vasarely and Georges Braque. The roof paintings by Jean-Claude Bédard disappeared due to the renovation of the terraces and the Chaplain-Midy pleasure garden, a partially completed work, was not maintained on the campus. Other projects were abandoned for financial reasons or lack of time, such as the decoration of the tower by Georges Braque who died before its completion. The five wings, a monumental stabile weighing five tonnes (4.8 x 8 x 5.9 m) was assembled in Saché (Indre et Loire) in collaboration with the Biemont company from Tours. This stabile has now been stored for around ten years, at the Coubertin Foundation awaiting planned restoration, in consultation with the Calder Foundation. Once rehabilitated, this monumental work should be erected on the campus of the Faculty of Sciences of Jussieu.
