H. 56 x 46.5 cm. French school circa 1821/1824. Portrait of the squadron leader Baron de Costalin (Jean-Pierre, François) of the grenadiers of the royal guard. His coat of arms, under a baron"s tortil at the top right, with three of his decorations, Order of Saint Louis (1814), Order of Fidelity (1814), Officer"s Cross of the Legion of Honor (1814). Oil on canvas. Born in Romans-sur-Isère on July 30, 1782, died in Versailles on June 26, 1835. He had an exceptional military career since joining the army as a mounted guide, the first fructidore in 6 to end up as squadron leader of the mounted grenadier regiment within the royal guard on October 12, 1815. He took part in the actions of 7, 8, 11 and 12 Vendémiaire in the year 14. He was wounded at Austerlitz on December 5, 1805. He fought in 1806, 1807, 1808, 1809 in Germany. He took part in the Russian campaign in 1812, fought in Saxony in 1813 and in France in 1814.
