Giovanni Domenico TIEPOLO (Venise 1727 - 1804) - Lot 79
A horse in profile Brown wash. Signed lower left Dom. Tiepolo f 17.7 x 23.2 cm Exhibition: Drawings of Old Masters, Paris, Galerie Hélène Aymonier, March 1970, no. 7, reproduced. Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo treated the horse as a subject in its own right on several occasions. We can cite The Construction of the Trojan Horse, a canvas belonging to the National Gallery in London (see A. Mariuz, Giandomenico Tiepolo, Venice, 19, p. 121, reproduced no. 268). Or even Turk on Horseback and Archer belonging to the Janos Schotz collection (See Op. cit. supra reproduced no. 20). Our drawing belongs rather to a very beautiful series of drawings on the equestrian theme. We can compare it to two drawings of similar technique, Horse in a Landscape (Sotheby"s Sale, London, July 5, 2006, no. 147, reproduced). Or Horse in profile facing right (Christie"s sale, London, July 10, 2001, no. 112, reproduced).
